Fireplace tiles
Ceramic tiles were an integral element in Victorian and Edwardian fire places, whether laid on the hearths or into the tile runs of tiled cast iron inserts. Original tiles of the period are becoming increasingly rare. The patterned tiles shown on this page are all original. For the most part, the accompanying plain tiles are new, imported by us from the U.K. manufacturer, Original Style. Above, a most attractive set of seven antique tiles c.1875. Aesthetic Movement transfer prints, manufactured by Mintons China Works. Originally intended as the side panels for tiled cast iron fire inserts, requiring five tiles for each panel. As two of the tiles needed for
that application have gone missing, the tiles could just as effectively be laid as a striking feature hearth, when combined with single
colour plain hearth tiles (see next page for full details). An eighth (end) tile is included. Each tile 153 x 153 x 10mm approx.
