Antique Rim Locks

A rim (or box) lock is fitted to the surface of a door, as opposed to a mortice lock which fits into a hole (or mortice) cut into the edge of a door. Rim locks were fitted to most houses of the Victorian period, with many varieties and manufacturers represented. On front doors the action was of a sliding nature (drawback), and on internal doors it was usually a lift-up mechanism closing into a steel and brass staple.
