Antique Letter Slots
Postal slots were introduced in late Victorian times, to complement existing centre door pulls and door knockers, as mail was delivered to the front door. The Victorian style of decoration is classical, as distinct from the Edwardian Art Nouveau slot which often combined knocker and pull and which became the norm around 1900. Both cast iron and brass were used. Although the "postie" may no longer come to our front door, the fitting of an original letter slot is a decorative detail that is well worthwhile.
